Hi, I’m Koseli. This is a weekly newsletter about my life in Seoul, motherhood, creativity, books, and products I love. I send it out every Sunday with the hope it feels more like a note from a friend than a newsletter.
Feel free to unsubscribe if this isn’t your jam, or subscribe if you’re feeling it. Let’s get to it.
I want to host a party.
Bump into strangers.
Hug my dad. Pick up my mom.
Kiss my nieces and nephews.
Laugh with my mother-in-law and watch the Hallmark channel.
Wave to friends as we drive by.
Stop by, unannounced and unmasked.
Eat lunch with my officemates.
Go to church and complain about it afterward.
Instead, I curl up next to my 10-year-old, peek at his Switch, and select Venosaur on mine. We play Pokemon Unite, round after round. We race to farm, score, battle. We recharge on our glowing purple bases and head back into the pretend fray. We occasionally lose each other in the game but find each other on the top path when Roton appears, fighting him until arrows guide us to our opponent’s glowing orange base for a quick score. My son pleads with me to stop using my mega weapon on the bees because “it’s such a waste”. When the countdown nears two minutes, we race to the middle, where we battle the ultimate a sharp-beaked monster, Zapdos, while also battling random crabs and pigs and frantic enemies. It’s chaos until, poof, Zapdos is gone and again, glowing arrows guide us to the closest glowing bases for final goals.
The final 10 seconds flash across the screen and the game is over. The scoreboard crowns my son for 200 points and I’m second place, with 176. Even though I told him only one match, we look at each other conspiratorially and press the blue Battle Again at the same time. One more round.
